If you were to book Business Class from Sydney to Auckland using Qantas Points, you would be charged 41,500 points one-way as a Classic Reward. But did you know that if you were to book this exact same flight using Alaska Miles, you’d only need 15,000 points for the exact same seat? In fact, it would cost more Qantas Points to fly economy on this flight than it costs to fly Business using Alaska Miles.

American Express transfers points to both Qantas and Alaska Airlines (indirectly via HawaiianMiles) at a 2:1 rate. In the above scenario, this generates significantly greater value by redeeming through Alaska Airlines. Note that transfers to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program are limited to select eligible Amex cards.

However, time is limited. The ability to transfer Amex points to Hawaiian (and subsequently to Alaska) will end on June 30, 2025. If you’re considering a Business Class trip from Australia’s East Coast to New Zealand, now is the time to book!
